Concentration is defined as a player’s ability to control the direction and attention of his thoughts and focus on the primary task at hand. It involves the narrowing of one’s focus to a single object of attention, as well as the ability to block out any surrounding distractions.
A player, who is fully engaged or “in the zone” is able to tune out everything around him, whether it is the action happening on an adjacent court or the noises coming from the stands. Concentration enables a player to channel all of his energy and focus on his shots, thinking about every movement, every technical skill and every tactical decision without over thinking. Any other thoughts outside of the “here and now” that have nothing to do with the next shot will distract a player and disrupt his rhythm.
Concentration is a mental skill that can be learned and developed through repetition and practice. The more a player practices being in situations that demand concentration and a single focus, training his mind to focus on what he is doing on the court and shutting out any unrelated outside thoughts, the more he can develop his concentration. |
