Power

Power is the amount of speed put on a shot and the ability to develop pace on a ball. It is generated through the combination of a player’s strength and the kinetic chain. The kinetic chain channels energy from the ground upward to the feet, legs, hips, trunk, shoulders, arm, wrist, hand and, finally, into the racquet. In other words, power is generated from the efficient movements of the entire body, not the just the arm.

In tennis, in order to create the efficient body movements required, it is essential to be relaxed and loose as the ball is hit. The free-flowing, relaxed motions allow the player to produce the necessary racquet head speed that generates the desired power on any given shot.

Powerful shots can put an opponent on the defensive by reducing his reaction time and causing him trouble covering the court. The key is learning how to harness and control that power with consistency, placement and spin. In the right circumstance, power can be a useful weapon, but if a player cannot hit the ball in the court when hitting it hard, power will become a weakness.
