Placement

Placement is an offensive tool because, when developed, it allows a player to run the opponent, pick on his weaker side, wrong-foot him and hit into the open court. In addition, placement gives a player better shot selection and accuracy; typically, this will help on passing shots, dictating points and produce fewer unforced errors.

Developing placement should always come before developing power because if a player cannot control the ball by hitting it where he wants in the court, his game will suffer. Going for too much power on a shot before knowing how to control it will create unforced errors. It is much easier to develop power after you have developed placement as opposed to developing placement after you have developed power.

Accuracy will allow a player to be either offensive or defensive without increasing the risk level of certain shots. Well placed groundstrokes can put a player in an offensive position without increasing his unforced errors by making the opponent cover more court and well placed volleys are also effective since you are attempting to win the point by taking time away from your opponent, not by beating him with pace. Accurate passing shots can turn a defensive situation into an offensive one very quickly.

Great placement can force your opponent into making more errors and having to cover more court without the player having to increase his pace of shot and, in turn, his unforced errors.
