Tracking skills

Tracking is the ability to follow a moving object smoothly and accurately with both eyes. In tennis, it is important to track the ball to the moment of contact, that is, to "see the ball hit the racquet."

The emphasis of tracking skills is getting into the right position and bringing your eyes to the point of contact. A player needs to "anticipate" and pay attention to preparation - where the ball is going to be and when it's going to be there.

One way to develop tracking skills is through predicting and intercepting drills. According to USPTA Master Pro Dave Porter, these skills are the cornerstone of shot technique and strike-zone setup: "Learning to predict where the opponent's ball will land, based on speed, spin, trajectory, height of the ball and where it will end up are predicting skills. Intercepting skills involve moving to the spot where you have predicted the ball will end up and being there ahead of your opponent's ball."

The most important part in tracking the ball is to keep the head still so the eyes can keep the focus needed. The better you can actually see the ball equates to more consistently arriving on balance to the proper hitting position, the better timing you'll have when you deliver your racquet out through the ball at contact, and the more confidence you'll have.
